The ADA Ramp guidelines are meant as an overview of the Actual ADA guidelines as set forth in GOVDOC. ADA ramp guidelines apply only to buildings that are in use by the general public, such as restaurants, stores, office buildings, apartment buildings and governmental offices (including polling places).
Private residences are not required to comply with ADA ramp access guidelines. However, if a permanent ramp is to be installed at a private residence the local building code will provide the guidelines by which the ramp is to be constructed.
Key Clauses in the ADA Ramp guidelines

- ADA Ramps should not exceed 1:12 ratio. Every inch or rise needs 12 inches of ramp
- ADA Ramps addressing more than 6 inches should have handrails
- ADA Ramps exceeding 30 feet must have intermediate platform
- ADA Ramps must have side flanges of 2 inches or more to prevent accidental slipping from edge
- ADA Ramps and Platforms must have non-skid surface and be designed to prevent water accumulation

Note: The ADA provides handicapped individuals the right to sue for damages in court when compliance has not been achieved.
